In 2008, LNB was taken over by BBVA Compass Bank, and the impressive building is still used as a bank. The Mexican Congress changed the status of Village City and renamed it Ciudad Laringo de Tamasulipsas. At the time, Governor Vital Fernandez declared that south of this river the name of the new town would be Villa Nuevo Lareso. This new border divided what is now known as "NueVO LAREDo" into three parts: the village of Villa, Villa de los Larses and Villa del Rio, or "Villa de las Nuelas."

Some old reports report that the inhabitants of San Agustin De Laredo, realizing that they had been disbanded on the US side and lost their land, moved back to the Mexican side, while the land they owned, including themselves, was buried with their relatives. This tradition continued in the new city called Nuevo Laringo, to distinguish the Americans of Lareso from the Mexicans. In 1895, a report by the Consul showed that imports from Mexico to Nruevo Naredo exceeded those from Matamoros, Piedras Negras and Nogales combined.
